Secondary School Leadership

Character without action has little meaning in this world. But leadership-acting in accordance with your character-can change the world.

- Bill George

This relevant and dynamic leadership program is focused on developing both individual and collective leadership skills with a focus on school-based initiatives eg. student council, clubs/committees, advocacy, student/staff partnerships, leadership classes, funding opportunities, special event planning, etc. Students will be given opportunities to explore and strengthen their own voice as "partners in education" and will, as a school group, develop a student-initiated action plan to take back to their own school setting.

Students will attend this course with a teacher advisor. The minimum number of students per school is 6 (with one teacher - the cost per teacher is $50). Please contact OELC if you need to discuss possible variations in the student/teacher ratio.

Students stay in their own cabins with OELC supervision. Teachers have separate accommodation. OELC staffs this course with exemplary teachers from across the province but an important component of the success of this program is the partnership with the schools’ teacher advisors. Not only is there unparalleled professional development from working alongside OELC teacher facilitators but the relationship-building with students makes all the difference upon return to the schools. Teacher advisors will be invited to participate in all components of the program with particular involvement in their own school action-plan meetings with a focus on supporting students as agents of change. Detailed information about the program and preparation requirements is sent to the students and teacher advisors upon registration.

We understand that transportation is an added cost for this Secondary School Leadership course. OELC is happy to help coordinate travel for schools attending from similar geographic locations.

Although students may attend more than one OELC course, it can not be the same course twice.

In all cases, students must be endorsed by their school to participate.
